ABOUT US

It all began on the Boschpoort farm, a 2,000-hectare maize and game property at the foot of South Africa’s Waterberg mountains in 1972. Originally owned by the Wessels family, the farm evolved into the renowned Mabalingwe Reserve, a conservation area now home to the Big Five and rich biodiversity.

Established as a holiday resort in 1989 under Basie Wessels, Mabalingwe expanded through the efforts of his son, Hannes, reaching over 9000 hectares with the introduction of species like elephants, hippos, rhinos, buffalos and lions.

Mabalingwe now serves as Boschpoort Safaris' home base, providing a stunning backdrop for our work. Boschpoort Safaris was officially registered in 2012, focusing on wildlife management and conservation within Mabalingwe on behalf of the Ludum game consortium.

Today, as a licensed hunting outfitter in Limpopo Province, Boschpoort Safaris remains owned and operated by the Wessels family, now in its fourth generation, proudly continuing the family’s legacy of responsible game management and conservation.

OUR HOME

AND LOCATION

Nestled in South Africa’s bushveld, Boschpoort Safaris calls the Waterberg mountain region home—a vibrant tropical and subtropical grassland and savanna ecosystem. Known for its abundant summer rains, the Waterberg transforms into a lush, green landscape, while winter brings sun-baked, golden grasses, all set against the rugged beauty of the mountains.

The landscape is rich with sicklebush trees and diverse wildlife, including the Big Five, symbolizing both beauty and heritage for the Mabalingwe Reserve. For generations, each member of the Wessels family has grown up hunting on this land, exploring every mountain and watching countless sunsets, creating a deep and personal bond with the property. The ground is more than a reserve; it is a family legacy and a natural treasure we proudly share with those who visit.

With a commitment to responsible game management, we work to maintain balanced wildlife populations, allowing the land to flourish without the strain of overgrazing. While there’s always more to accomplish, Boschpoort Safaris treats our home with respect and pride, ensuring that the Mabalingwe Reserve remains a place of natural wonder, and conservation for generations to come.
